Friendly game between FC Schalke 04 and KV Oostende. Check 28:10 (replay in 32:36) - the referee, Spanish Jorge Tárraga Lajara, booked the player for dissent by word and immediately issued a second yellow card for following clapping at the ref. Well done! Many top-level referees are not brave enough to kick such behaviours out of football.

Both teams agreed to allow KV Oostende playing second half with 11-man, however the referee refused it. One can discuss about it...

    2. Video here in my country works, referee was absolutely right and I praise him. Players must learn respect, even in friendly games.

    3. In the friendly between Mainz and Feyenoord (also in Spain), a player was sent off (for insulting the referee) and immediately replaced by a substitute, so that the game continued 11vs11. Both coaches agreed on that and the referee accepted it.
I understand the idea behind it, but actually I don't think the LotG allows something like that, even in friendlies. So I would support a referee, who refuses, and maybe criticize the referee, who allowed it.

    4. However, it's common practice in club friendlies not being televised by big broadcasters or not being part of friendly tournaments, etc.

      Delete
    5. In an 'official' friendly (i.e., with a crowd, etc.), I'd allow it if and only if both teams agreed on it before the game started. If not, then we play be regular IFAB laws, and players sent off are not replaced.

    6. I go with Philipp here. Specially in lower level friendlies. It is more than beneficial if e.g. youth players get the early message "what you did makes your team suffer even in a friendly"... I never was a friend of adapted LotG in friendlies.

      Delete
    7. I was never a friend of adapting the LOTG to friendly matches. That's why it annoys me to see referees "forget" their cards and defending themselves by saying "it's just a friendly match".

I am definitely with Philipp and Niclas on this one.

  5. Quite striking CRUCIAL MISTAKE by Ángel Nevado Rodríguez to cancel a 1-0 to Barcelona....

  6. Three disastrous offside decision in 30 minutes from AR1 Ángel Nevado Rodríguez in Barcelona-Athletic. First one Suarez was onside, in second (25?') Neymar was well onside and the goal was annulled, and finally Neymar was more than a meter offside and the flag stayed down. Very challenging match for AR1, but too many mistakes already.

  7. Weird performance from Gil's team in Barcelona. In first half 3-4 big offside mistakes coming from AR1.Performance of Jesus Gil to me was average. Some obvious fouls weren't called and some should have been booked, for example Iraizoz for time wasting, Benat earlier for tackling Messi from behind and San Jose for another tackle. In 2nd half it was much better, there were no offside mistakes and Gil was pretty good in 2nd half.,I am just wondering how can Inaki be booked for protest, when for similar protest 10-15 minutes earlier Suarez wasn't booked?

    1. Second half he had a crucial "mistake" by not giving the atletic player a second yellow for SPA on Messi. It was clear that he simply didn't want to give him a red card.

    2. Yeah,Benat tackling Messi,I forgot about that.Clear 2nd yc for him not given there.

    3. I did. Probably I will never get used to Undiano Mallenco's style of refereeing. Yesterday evening he started quite strict and fussy and from time to time he came more and more generous. Not really great but neither bad. Correct penalty call in favor of Real.

Frank Andås (Moens AR2) retires with immediate effect, after being replaced from Team Moen. This has lead to many reactions from earlier top-level referees in Norway. Moen himself says that "the team needs new impulses to get even better".

    1. Great... Well done, Mr Moen...

      Delete
    2. According to Norwegian media, the decision to replace Andås was taken by the Norwegian head of refereeing, Terje Hauge. Hauge even says in an interview that "it was random who in the team who had to be replaced"

Nonetheless a very sad decision. Imo, the assistants aren't the biggest problem in Team Moen as it is now...

      Delete
    3. To be honest, if confirmed, I don't understand the sense of such choice by Hauge. Andås was the less responsible for what happened in recent games. What I remember is only a huge mistake by Haglund, AR1, in Napoli - Dnipro, but apart from that assistant referees were never a real problem in the Norwegian sextet. Moen himself must find motivations, because, almost in every game, major issues were about control, foul detection, card management and so on. This choice is really something unexpected, and the fact that it was made, as I read, just to give a "shake", makes it definitely difficult to understand. I can guess how Andås can feel now, the resignation from FIFA and Norwegian FA as assistant referee, if confirmed, is a very strong signal against this decision. I don't say he was right in doing that, but surely one can understand him.

      Delete
    4. 3 opportunities:

      1) The decision was taken by Moen himself - I cannot imagine that.
      2) The decision was taken by Hauge and his committee as reported by Johannes. If so, the sentence "it was random who in the team had to be replaced" is an evidence of incapacity. Someone's career is randomly killed. So referee placement decisions are made "randomly" in Norway? I often used the term "alea iacta est" to illustrate UEFA's promotion decisions... but I never thought such decisions are REALLY random :) Insane.
      3) Someone from Nyon made pressure.

      Delete
    5. And what is the most important: Moen is and still will be in Elite Group... To be honest, I can't understand all those moves regarding Norwegian referee...

      Delete
    6. Here is the interview with Hauge in its entirety:

"Head of refereeing: - Frank is not sacrificed

Head of refereeing Terje Hauge praises Frank Andås, but is still the man behind the decision to take the Gjøvik-based referee out of Team Moen.

      - That Frank is "sacrified" is harsh to say. Frank is a wonderful boy, has been a part of the team for five years, and has done an excellent job. Team Moen has good results on the very best European level, but there is a time for everything. Performance over time, feedback, and the total implies that we have to adjust the team. Therefore, Frank is taken out of Team Moen. In a performance-based group, one has to take difficult decisions sometimes, in this phase we wished new impulses into the team, is how Hauge explains the decision of putting Magnus Lundberg in the job of Frank Andås.

He admits that it is random who was sacrificed to get new impulses.

      - It could just as well have been Kim Tomas (Haglund). Why it went this way, is an internal case. We have had a thorough process this autumn, and the decision was Frank. I have to emphasize that Frank not was discontinued as FIFA-AR. We would happily have him to continue in the Norwegian top level and as a FIFA-AR, but we're happy that he now joins the Norwegian FA as AR-coach, and can transfer his competence to coming FIFA-ARs, when he took the decision to retire, Hauge says."

  11. Confirmation from Quebec that Marie-Josée Charbonneau and Suzanne Morisset, Carole-Anne Chénard's assistants, have retired from the FIFA list: http://www.federation-soccer.qc.ca/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1037%3Aoscar-mitchell-carvahlo-promu-sur-la-prestigieuse-liste-des-arbitres-assistants-de-la-fifa&catid=56&Itemid=808&lang=fr

  12. Two very brave decisions of Benoît Bastien in the Stade Rennais FC - Paris Saint-Germain FC game:

  13. Tottenham Hotspur FC - West Bromwich Albion FC (Anthony Taylor):

    2) missed foul and VC?

  14. 1) for me nothing, correct decision to play on
    2) interesting situation, and let me say not easy to be detected live, indeed there is a clear reaction by #2 TOT, who deliberately kicks the opponent, it happens in less than a second, almost impossible for the officials, of course merely according to LotG RC, but on the pitch more than difficult to see

  15. Italian serie A, Crotone - Bologna:

In my opinion, a clear RC for SFP missed by Calvarese.

  16. On Bastien:
On the first decision, he must have X-Ray eyes with integrated replay ability! Very well done on both.
On Antony Taylor: First one correct; on the second one, I think a talking to could've sufficed.
    On Calvarese: Obvious RC.

    1. I must say excellent decision by Bastien, live it looked like an obvious penalty, but I guess that the French referee was aware of the fact that Verratti is sometimes well known as a player with a certain tendancy to simulate, indeed he made that again.
Second situation is still a simulation, but easier (if I can use this term) to spot. At any rate, I would praise Bastien, assigning a very high mark!

  17. Did you see Man UTD goal for 1-1? At the beginning of action, attacker was in small offside (near sideline). Did AR2 have any chance to see that? No! Why? Because he was FIVE meters away from the situation! Where he was, what he did there - no one knows! Incredibly bad positioning. Really incredible. In such derby match. few minutes earlier the same AR raised the flag when Rooney was onside.

    1. This is what happens when the assistant looks too much on the ball instead of the line:

    2. This is not funny anymore. In Premier league in every week ARs make unbelievable mistakes. Many of them, such as this one, may decide the champion. Liverpool could and should be very upset by the refs decisions: they lost Europa League final due to Eriksson's numerous mistakes (they should get at least two PKs in first half), and now they lost 2 important points in championship race with Chelsea. I believe you wont agree with me here, but those are the facts.

    3. In Erikssons match there was maximum 1 handball when the player crouched down and it hit his arm.

    4. Honestly I was surprised to read the name McDonough for AR2 in Manchester, no big games for him in quite a few months even years, at any rate he is in the twilight of his career. Very poor position to judge the situation before 1-1, no Crucial Mistake to me but -0,3 as it wasn't directly for a goal but still of course important. Eriksson was different though and I don't so much see the point of such popularistic analysis, although certainly you have a point of English ARs.

    1. Why did you remove my comment? PK for Real was not a gift?

    2. Perhaps you forgot some other words you used. However, even "gift" is not acceptable there. You can say: "it is a mistake, wrong decision" and so on.
      And...

In my opinion penalty is correct. There is at first the contact and then only after that, PERHAPS keeper touches slightly the ball. At any rate, a very difficult situation.

    3. Is it even that controversial? Seems a very defensible decision for me.
