    1. Thanks. For what I know, there should be at least 2 VAR officials for a game, so perhaps a French referee will be there with Stieler?

    2. DFB didn't mention another VAR. Hellmut Krug, the project manager for video refereeing in Bundesliga, is there to support the team.
There are offline tests in Germany since the start of the season, every referee could already gain some experience as VAR.

    1. Agreed! Anyone that has refereed a match at U6/7 or so can empathise with Skomina....
Relaxed would be a nice description of his style

      Delete
    2. Nonetheless, missing an obvious foul as that on Schürrle is not so nice...

Overall, great no-penalty call (06'; sprinting ability is missing, though!), missed YC (26'; no referee had a good angle to catch it!) and FK (65'), no yellow card to Cahill is still acceptable (61').

My mark is 8.3 due to usual fitness/sprinting/positioning/alertness (delete where not applicable) issues...

      Delete
    3. Again totally agreed! I think Skomina is the new best friendly referee in the world, replacing Proenca ;-D
If you replace the word nice for generous, that's probably better phrased^

  15. Ivory Coast - Senegal yesterday was refereed and abandoned (crowd on the pitch) by Tony Chapron (FRA).

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Tony Chapron once again confirmed that he is a very strict referee.
No compromises: he always issues RC for the minimum word, and now he has suspended this game for a few fans invading the pitch. Most of the referees would have waited some minutes, before taking a decision He could have allowed teams to play the remaining time.
Now, is this 1-1 a valid final score for statistics? Some sites report it, but since the game was abandoned before the 90' minute, this match should be considered as annulled.

      Delete
    2. I am not sure whether the video shows everything. A newspaper report, which I read, sounded more dramatic.
I also read, the result would count, because more than 90% were played - but that's the first time I have heard of such a "rule"

      Delete
    3. Indeed, you are right. I looked for further info, it seems as the match had been already suspended in first half. This would give more sense to the decision of stopping it only a few minutes before final whistle.
About the rule you heard, I share your doubts. :)

  16. Fourth Officials:

    RUS-CIV: Sergey Karasev (Russia)
    EST-CRO: Reelika Turi (Estonia)
    GEO-LVA: Giorgi Kruashvili (Georgia)

From what I have seen, the assistant referees in SCO-CAN were Lars Rix and Dennis Wollenberg Rasmussen, fourth official Jørgen Daugbjerg Burchardt.

  17. FRA-ESP, 48': Goal disallowed (offside) by VAR
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2E4RBuMKBo
I think it was rather the pass into the penalty area, but actually both passes are suspicious. Maybe we will get a better video.

    1. Hey Philipp, good video decision by VAR but tigh offside for AR2 Achmuller. But not a good night for him with another Offside wrongly flagged against Mbappé. Very good job for Zwayer, convinced and confident.
Wow now, VaR overulled AA1 and goal accepted : nightmare for assistants. We have to react about that: assistants referees are in very difficult conditions in such cases...problematic for their credibility, what do you think guys?

      Delete
    2. Very good decision by VAR and a few minutes later, penalty in favor of Spain.
The offside on second pass is clear, strange that AR missed it. About the first pass: offside as well, but in this case less blatant. Would VAR have intervened as well only with the first offside?

      Delete
    3. Chefren, did you see 0-2 ? Here in France people said that Assistants referees are useless now...clear a debate is incoming now. And I should not be AR in such matches now. We saw AA1´s face expression before VAR decision and fearness on his eyes is problematic in my opinion...ref with his permanent possible overruling ? A good choice for football ?

      Delete
    4. And finally : is Felix Zwayer whistled Offside flagged before the goal so in that case we have to cancel goal and impossible to allow it... many questions :)

      Delete
    5. Assistant referees are instructed to keep their flags down in case there is even the smallest doubt, so we will be seeing play being less stopped for offsides in important situations. As Michał Listkiewicz (former(?) FIFA Referees Committee) said: we will have good actions, good football and sometimes goals will be annulled by VARs (rarely by assistant referees as I understand it). Well, show must go on...

      Delete
    6. Good decision : whistle after the goal. But guys, can you expect that in these cases, refs have to whistle with delayed time to have right to allow goal after VAR interaction because if they interupted actions before no legal allowance possible ?

      Delete

    7. Yes, I watched right now with some delay the 0-2, I didn't watch the game live, so I'm looking for videos as soon as they are available.
Well, a very difficult decision for AR1, if I'm not wrong, the foot of a defender was keeping onside the attacker. I think, a "natural" and "normal" mistake. Good that VAR intervened. I think that assistant referees at high level must realize they will be carefully analyzed by VAR in every game, they should have a free mind about that. Just making their work, as they did before. No intervention without evident mistakes. This evening we had two clear mistakes, even though one could still say "tight" offside in the first case, and "tight" onside in the second case, both were clear situations. So, the assistant referees should be content with that. Moreover, officials shouldn't be interested in what people and fans will think.
The last question you asked is very interesting Benoit Auguste, and in my opinion a hot topic about VAR: what happens if in such situations we have an early whistle and the goal is not scored due to a wrong offside call but the player is alone in front of the empty net or something like that? We have to wait for the first case which will surely happen. But merely according to guidelines, VAR can be used only when a goal is scored, so in all the other cases, even though the goal is scored "a bit later"", unluckily, VAR wont be applied.

    8. True Ray. Agree with you but what do you think about emotionnal instability for AR during match with this VAR in front of their human judgements ? Won't they allow more goals to be more comfortable ? Isn't unbalanced feelings for AR ?

      Delete
    9. Completely agree with your brilliant analysis Chefren. And confirmed Zwayer whistled after goal. So no problem here. Do you think you are in front of a completely different way of refereeing for Elite refs? Isn't a major change on refs mind with these kind of VAR decisions ?

      Delete
    10. In my opinion, Elite referees should understand that their authority wont be tarnished by VAR. The latter will be a very important tool for correcting a decision when it will be crucial. Making mistakes is human, it wont change. In future we will have mistakes as well, but luckily with VAR. Again, I think that the major point is about the mental acceptance by referees: they must understand that apparently nothing will change. A 50-50 situation in which a penalty may be given, will be still at their discretion, for example. About offsides, VAR will intervene only when the mistakes will be clear, like this evening.
However, since I didn't watch the game, can you say more about the penalty? Correct decision? Evidence of a possible confirmation by VAR?

      Delete
    11. That's probably the main reason for those big names in the U20 WC. There they'll be trained with the VAR before the WC in a not so relevant competition.

    12. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTn3FqLT1c8
At 8:50 there is the penalty. No evidence of VAR influence, I think.
Acceptable call IMO, but I am not sure, whether the VAR would have intervened, if Zwayer had not given it (because it is not a clear situation).

      Delete
    13. IMO Correct decision by Zwayer. Apparently, french reporters said German ref didn't use VAR confirmation for penalty action. Decision was clear for him. So here, with 0-0 score, do you think ref must or should wonder VAR for confirming his judgement ?

      Delete
    14. Finally overall very good performance for me. I had the feelings to see a new "Wolfgang Stark" with him : perhaps German colleagues can argue about my impression ! ^^

      Delete
    15. Well, it's a strange situation at 2-0. We have a flag for offside. The referee didn't manage to whistle before the goal is scored. But still, flag is up and there is no possibility to overrule the assistant due to mistake that can be solved by teamwork. I don't think it should be reviewed by VAR, to be honest.

  18. https://twitter.com/Capital_Deporte/status/846826668597620737 Is it me or Zwayer looks like "sad" just before giving the goal? Like if he was sorry for the mistake... the body language, mainly.
