34 Comments:

  1. Some notes:
Metz - Toulouse could be the last game in Ligue 1 for Stéphane Lannoy. He should retire at the end of the season. He was out from Ligue 1 matches since December.
Impressive end of the season for Buquet: he handled Nice - PSG (very likely the game that decided Ligue 1 in favor of Monaco), then he got Monaco on the next matchday (another crucial game for the title) and now a very important game between two teams fighting for keeping the category.
For what I saw consulting the appointments every week, good season for Benoît Bastien as well.
In Spain, Alberto Undiano Mallenco will officiate Real Madrid - Sevilla, very likely the last chance for Barcelona regarding the title. They need a draw or a loss by Real.
In England, after Clattenburg's official retirement, Atkinson becomes surely the nr. 1 and he got many top clashes this season. This week, a very important game as well. Hull City must manage to remain in Premier League.

    1. This season is also the last for Wolfgang Stark.

    2. More than a good season for Benoît Bastien actually, Chefren. He has been appointed for the French Cup Final.

      Assistant Referee 2: Julien Pacelli

    3. I have the impression, that nearly all top matches in France go to Turpin, Buquet or Bastien. It feels like less variation than in other big leagues.

In Germany, not only Stark, but also Günter Perl and Jochen Drees will retire. All three might work as VAR next season.

      Delete
    4. Philipp, I can confirm your impression. While Turpin is still considered on paper on number 1, I have the feeling that Buquet gets much more top clashes this season than Turpin or Bastien. There is unfortunately no variation at all because there seems to be quite some chaos in the refereeing department (it's my view as a neutral spectator):
      - Lionel Jaffredo - the only non-FIFA referee in France who was entrusted with high-profile matches regularly - has been demoted to Ligue 2 in January, because he failed physical tests.
      - Stéphane Lannoy has lost a lot of credit since he heavily criticized the management inside the French Refereeing Department two years ago (same for Saïd Ennjimi). Plus, also he was demoted after failing physical tests in January: his Ligue 1 appointment this weekend can thus be read as a farewell game.
      - It happens quite often that referees often referee the same teams in very short timespaces: Buquet for instance handled PSG twice inside 3 weeks in April (against Guingamp and Nice), same with Monaco in October 2016 (against Metz and Saint-Étienne).
      - Nicolas Rainville and Antony Gautier were missing a lot of the season because they were injured.
      - François Letexier was put on the FIFA list for 2017, having made his Ligue 1 debut only in January 2016. Basically, he's treated like Turpin on UEFA level before Euro 2016.
      - Buquet not only is appointed in many top-clashes in Ligue 1 this season, he also oversaw two top-clashes in Ligue 2 in the past three months.
      - Sometimes appointments are suddenly changed: the most notable change happened in January for Metz-Montpellier. Olivier Thual was appointed for Metz-Montpellier, but he was replaced by Hakim Ben El Hadj, who is a Ligue 2 referee. According to the blog "Arbitrage57", Ben El Hadj was called in the morning to drive in car from Grenoble to Metz (about 600 km) to officiate there in the evening. At the same weekend, Frank Schneider (FIFA) had no game and lives near Strasbourg, which is an hour away by train from Metz.
      - Turpin is still considered on paper by the Refereeing Department as the number 1 in their raking, but Buquet has been voted by players and coaches as the best referee in the last three years.

Actually, the French Refereeing Department seem to have recognized that variation might be good, because Frank Schneider (FIFA enlisted since January 2016) is gaining more trust and is given bigger matches and does overall a good job (he oversaw twice PSG-Monaco: in Ligue 1 and in the Coupe De La Ligue Final).

    1. In England there aren't age limits, he can continue as referee.
We have, just for example, Roger East, who is 51 (52 in a few days...).

Dr. Felix Brych will handle the Champions League final
Damir Skomina appointed for Europa League final
Bibiana Steinhaus appointed for Women's Champions League final.

    Replies
    1. Hopefully this explains why Marciniak will be in the middle in South Korea because Brych will have to return after the group stages!! This is great planning from Collina... As soon as Bayern and Dortmund were eliminated I think Collina knew that this would be the best opportunity for Brych to be given the Final... Very good appointment!! Congratulations to Skomina as well... But if they weren't going to give Mazic any final then surely they should've given him a UCL Semi-final based on his good performances... But good appointments for the finals overall!!

    2. Wow, Collina surprises once again. Good luck to the officials!

    3. To add that: Mazic will be Fourth Official in CL Final and Gianluca Rocchi in EL Final.

  9. Leverkusen - Köln for Perl. A derby to say good-bye. Stark and Dress will make their farewell games next week.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think that it is the last game for Perl - in the past, the referees who had to quit got a last match on 34th Matchday. I predict his last match will be Dortmund-Bremen. Stark has an important game in Second Division and will likely get a last match next week. Drees is injured (already for more than a month) - unfortunately it is almost certain that he won't get a last match. Maybe DFB has something in mind to give him a deserved farewell game (e.g. Super Cup?).

      Delete
    2. For Stark, it should be Frankfurt-Leipzig, the only match without relevance (except mid-table positions).
For Perl, I think it's possible that the derby was his farewell game (with a very good performance). Otherwise Gladbach-Darmstadt seems the least important match and therefore a possible appointment for Perl. I feel, Dortmund-Bremen is too important, but of course, not impossible

  13. Missed RC:DOGSO by Gonzàlez Gonzàlez in LPA -BAR
And a very controversial and tactically unwise 1-0 in RLM-SEV, a 'quick' freekick but it was about ten seconds after the whistle, Undiano Mallenco has been around since years - I'm surprised he did that tbh

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. However, I see no reason to invalidate the goal. There was no YC or RC to make the whistle mandatory, so, although it is not fair play by Nacho, Undiano had no choice.

    2. Oh yeah I totally agree in the sense of the LOTG.
But it could have been better managed imo

      Delete
    3. Dont agree George. If you look carefully, Mallenco first of all hide ball vision for Goalkeeper. In addition, free kick is played one meter below good position on the pitch where ref is. So, he has one good reason to cancel this ridiculous goal IMO.

    4. This is 100% against the spirit of the game imo. Unreal that the FK wasnt retaken.
