  1. Netherlands - Norway (Women's EURO):

Easy-going first half for Stéphanie Frappart. She chose the right approach, an early reckless tackle by NOR14 was immediately punished with a caution. The players mainly focus on playing football, no major incidents in the first half.

    1. Second half:

The match remained calm and players were only focusing onplaying. Frappart with only one minor mistake with a wrong freekick to NED (60'). There was a penalty appeal at 80' for NED, correctly rejected in my view. One more caution for SPA to NED14 during added time. Overall a good performance by the French referee.

      8.4

AR2 Kyriakou had problems with assessing offsides and onsides: 3 wrong calls (50' wrong offside / 56' wrong onside / 83' wrong onside).

    3. In support of K.S.'s analysis, on which I largely agree, find some clips in the link below.
Regarding the offside situations in 50' and 82' I'm a little more reluctant in assessing them as clearly wrong (the 'freeze' in the 50' replay was not correctly timed).
And the YC in 90+1' in my opinion was given for delaying the restart instead of SPA. UEFA's match report states it was given for handball, but that seems highly unlikely to me.

  2. All referees who attended U19 tournament got a game in this round of CL / EL.
Mads-Kristoffer Kristoffersen (DEN), Davide Massa (ITA), Ola Hobber Nilsen (NOR), Sergey Lapochkin (RUS), Srdjan Jovanović (SRB) in CL, while Ali Palabiyik (TUR) in EL. But I think this is just a coincidence, I would say that most of the assignments were already decided during U19 tournament.

  4. DENMARK - BELGIUM (Women's EURO)

Kateryna Monzul has full control of the match, a calm and communicative approach towards the players, which works rather well. Nevertheless, it seems that she missed a handball penalty for DEN (30'). I need to rewatch that scene somewhere, I haven't seen it properly.

(Sorry to post everything under this thread, not related to Women's EURO).

    2. I've seen the handball scene. Arm was in an unnatural position, but one could discuss about the distance between arm and ball, which was quite short.

      Delete
    3. Second half:

The match remained calm, but the last 10-15 minutes were quite intense. Monzul has shown some very good refereeing with some good advantages and with having been highly consistent when it came to reckless fouls and tactical fouls, a penalty was also correctly rejected IMO. The assistants were faultless concerning offside situations.

I'd be on an 8.5 here, if we back her in the handball scene from the first half.

  7. ITALY - RUSSIA (Women's Euro)

Adámková is doing an overall good job. She allows quite a lot of physical play (which works rather well) speaks out clear public warnings (7') and rejected correctly a penalty (19'). There was quite an interesting scene just before half-time (41'): attack by ITA, then the Russian goalkeeper crashes in the Italian attacker. Italy wanted a penalty, Adámková called the offside position (arm was raised) by the attacker simultaneously as the keeper and the attacker crashed, which led to some confusion. Nevertheless a correct decision!

    1. The situation from 41' mentioned above (offside):

    2. Second half:

Exciting end again. Adámková started the second half with a missing YC after a studs-tackle (50'). The three YC given were correct (61' time-wasting - 68' foul - 90' dissent). Nevertheless, Adámkova missed a penalty for ITA (and maybe also a YC here) in 83'. From that moment she was more challenged: AR2 correctly disallowed the potential 2-2 for Italy for offside. In 90+2', the ball nearly crossed the line, there was no clear replay, but the call made by Adámková and her AR (play-on) seems correct. In 90+3' there was a missed YC for RUS after shirt-pulling.
Overall, she had full control and was accepted on the pitch. She allowed a lot of physical play, but that worked quite well. There were only some minor mistakes (concerning corner-kicks and goal-kicks).

    1. Second half:

Nearly the same scenario in the second half for Kulcsár, very little do. Only 1 caution for SPA in 75' for GER60. Sweden appealed for a PK in 67', correctly rejected, no replay was shown. Only minor mistake: missing YC for a tackle from behind in 60'. AR's were faultless concerning offside decisions. Overall a good performance in an easy-going match.

  10. AUSTRIA - SWITZERLAND (B. Steinhaus)

Steinhaus is doing overall a good job, there aren't many decisions to make. In 3', there was a penalty appeal by AUT waved away, seemed correct. The only YC given so far (19') seems wrong IMO: SUI15 plays the ball before sliding in her opponent.
No issues in terms of match control.

    1. 60': absolutely correct RC to SUI14 for DOGSO outside the penalty area.

      Delete
    2. Second half:

In the big picture, Steinhaus did an overall good job, the major decisions were correctly assessed (RC for DOGSO in 60' + penalty appeal for handball around 78-80, seems undeliberate for me). However we could discuss about 2 missed YC: in 83' and in 85'. The situation in 83' can be compared to the YC situation in 19': the ball was played before the tackle. In 85', I'd preferred a YC for pulling the opponent back.

  11. What exactly is Vitulano's disciplinary line? Renard seemed to commit a typical foul at midfield which resulted in a caution. Yet player #8 from Iceland puts her cleat into Le Sommer's knee and no caution on that?

    ReplyDelete
  12. FRANCE - ICELAND (C. Vitulano)

I share Sheriff's words. Vitulano with an overall poor performance in this first half. She allows (too) much physical play, but clear fouls are not given. Her card selection is quite confusing as well: at least 2 missed YC in my opinion (19' and 26'). And as Sheriff alteady said: the YC for FRA3 was very soft, the only explanation for me is that she considered the foul as tactical. Furthermore, there are three potential cases of crucial mistakes:
13' potentially missed PK for FRA (shirt-pulling)
34' YC ISL3: foot of the French player was in the air, ISL3 is flying with high-speed and a stretched leg in the foot. For me more SFP than reckless.
45+1' potentially missed PK for Iceland.

She furthermore booked the Icelandic coach for dissent right after Iceland's penalty appeal. So the second case of such a booking after Madden at U21 EURO.

I strongly hope that Vitulano will find a clear and predictable line!

    1. Second half:

Much calmer for Vitulano in decision-making. The caution in 54' for ISL3 is correct for handling the ball. The rejected penalty in 74' for FRA is a borderline decision for me, need to rewatch that though. The penalty to FRA in 85' has been correct, perhaps a YC could have been issued here. But she missed as well again a few fouls.

Overall, Vitulano with a disappointing performance overall. For now, I won't be assigning a clear mark to it. Let's see whether she will get another assignment, but after tonight, I highly doubt that she goes to the knockout-stages.

  13. Vitulano does not make predictable decisions. She is poor to recognize fouls. Hope this match isn't expensive to France what it comes to injuries.

    1. Absolutely agreed, no room for discussion here I think. An unnaturally outstretched arm and an expected ball coming from a far distance... With a little more dynamic positioning and a more sidewise angle of view the PK would problably have been given.

    2. You stole my words ;-)
Overall okay performance, cohesion between the (makeshift) Swedish-Romanian team isn't at the highest level I sense, but no critical situations. A missing, at least, verbal warning for a foul by ESP at around 30' that counts to being 'cynical'. Good onside by AR2 Tepusa for 2-0.
Calm game without big challenges for Larsson, but she did miss a penalty.

    3. And the clips of this match:

      https://vimeo.com/album/4688221

In the second half no challenging or otherwise notable situations for Pernilla Larsson, who did an overall good job. Unfortunately there was the missed handball penalty in the 1st half.

      Delete
  16. Esther Staubli with a convincing performance in the British derby between England and Scotland, not being overly challenged though. Three bookings, spot on, and no disputable situations furthermore. In 8' a wrong offside flag by ASR2, whereas ASR1 made a good onside decision (53') before the 4th England goal.

  18. EURO Women: Svetlana Bilić (SRB) has been appointed again for Iceland after her first game FRA - ISL, this time paired with a Russian duo.. More than strange, if not a mistake.

    1. Remarkable long-time career of Konrad Sapela who entered the FIFA list in 1998. Until 2008/09 he was assigned for 14 UEFA Cup/Europa League games and then had to wait until 2016/17 when he got appointed again for another two Europa League games. Although already 46 years of age and never having participated in a Champions League match, he still appears on the FIFA list and seems stronger than many years before until last season.

On the other hand: Poland currently has four UCL/EL referees (Marciniak, Raczkowski, Gil and Stefanski) which might be an important reason for his (maybe unexpected) comeback in the Europa League at the age of 45.

    2. It's also because no one wants Rostkowski in the team and Sadczuk was fired by Polish FA.

    1. Penalty and careless SPA, so no YC.

    2. Muslera was already booked for complaints.
I think this was considered as SPA so no card... supportable in my opinion.
Without the foul, maybe attacker wouldn't have reached the ball.

  29. Very clear second yellow card missed here by the german team, not reckless but for me its a very clear attempt to play the ball from muslera and the player would have a clear goalchance in the next situation. This is a situation that you cant argue about a card,I saw the match live and he was close to the situation and should have trusted his gut instinct here Bastian. He actually reach his pocket but his assistant changed him. This i a kind of situation were you should make the call buyourself and not let the assistant make the call, black and white -0.5 on both assistant and Bastian.

I will be a little bit harsch here but i really didnt like his style of refereeing in the match. No karisma on field,no personality, not close enough in situation when his presence needed, clear unbalance between distance and close refeerering.Bad first yellow card on muslera(he should have give it on a situation before when he instead did a public warning that was a black and white yellow card on a galatasaray player). On the situation when muslera was booked, very poor management of the situation before,östersund player seems like injured and instead of either whistle directly,he let the game flow and after 15-20 seconds he stops the game.He created the kaotic situation himself and then muslera got a card(correctly) but the whole situation should have been solved match better by a uefa referee like him.

Niclas:Does this sounds like Bastian in the Bundesliga or was this match top big for him?I was really dissipointed actually on his performance/Johan.

    1. I can only give you my impression in terms of his refereeing style. In my view, it is neither a too tight focus on applying the laws of the game, nor a clear management-oriented approach. It is neither top-down nor very cooperative in my view. Of course we do not know how he verbally communicates on the field of play. So to answer your question - he did not have the luckiest season in 2016/17, but there have been reasons why he got the FIFA badge.

  30. Thank you for your answer Niclas! It seems like Uefa didnt wanted or saw the penalty situation as a mandatory second yellow card becuase he got a new match in EL next week.Really strange for me,not only isolated the penalty situation but overall leadership and management on field was not satisfying.

    1. If I am not mistaken, Dankert was already appointed before the kick-off in Istanbul :) (or at least before UEFA could get any report by the observer). I am pretty sure that for UEFA this is a 2nd yellow card. You can put forward 3 lines of argumentation in terms of that:

      1) It was DOGSO, but a clear attempt to play the ball = YC.
      2) It was no DOGSO, but no clear attempt to play the ball = YC.
      3) In the big picture, the football society expects a yellow card in such a situation. Freeze the frame at the moment of the contact and you can easily see that no card is actually a surreal decision.

Of course, there are arguments for SPA, and IMO there are also strong arguments to deem it as a clear attempt to play the ball. But in the big picture, I cannot support "no card". The only doubt I have: Wasn't the attacker actually losing balance and falling over his own legs even if there had not been any foul? What do you think?

      Regards!

  31. I actually had a pretty good view from my seatpoint(maybe of interest,Alain Hamer observator sat two rows downstairs from me) and a no card is exactly as you say no option here. There could be some argument about that Muslera did it with purpose but I think a direct red card for DOGSO would be too difficult to "sell it in stadium/mainstream".I think that Goddos(forward) had enough balance to stay on his feet to have a clear goalchance in the next situation.Maybe the ball was a little bit from him but he was before the last defender and had enough speed to reach the ball before the defender.

He didnt start the match concentrated Bastian, too little prevention and closeness to the first 3-4 fouls/potential dangers in the beginning and that gave him little acceptance from the players in galatasaray. And then you add the public warning and bad management when muslera was booked made it hard for players/audience to buy his decisions.Second half was easier becuase the intensity dropped after the penalty kick, galatsaray stopped playing.

As a last few words,i have seen this lenient trend going on in europe and it i not making any good for players/media respect for the referees.in the penalty situation it is unbeliveble that Dankert(who reached his pocket but changed after assistant cooperation) trusted his assistants more than himself in a situation where he was closest/best position to make a call on his own.The stadium would have explode becuase Muslera is loved by galatasaray crowd but as fifa referee you cant be afraid/take these things in consideration when making a call.

    Thanks/Johan
